Dear Baja Teams,

You are formally invited to Michigan Technological University's Winter Baja Competition.  The competition will take place on Saturday, February 19th in Lake Linden which is 15 minutes from the Michigan Tech campus.  Two 90 minute endurance races will be held as well as a dynamic event.  It’s a great chance to test your cars for 2011 competitions or simply get drive time.

Entrance fee this year will be $100 for the first car and will include dinner and trophies following the event.  Bring as many cars as you want; each additional car is $50. Registration is open until February 19th; payments must be received by then if arrangements have not been made otherwise. There will be a $10 discount for registering earlier than February 5th.

This year we are implementing a new online payment option. This will allow you to pay for the event online with a credit card. The system has not been completed yet, but we expect it to be done before the end of the year. Since the website is still under construction we don’t have the details of all the information it will ask you for, but it will have the entrance fee plus an additional fee for each additional car. It will also asks for the team name, car numbers and the name and contact information of the team captain/president. Even though we will have the online system we would still appreciate it if you still fill out the registration form and email it back to us. This will allow you to reserve your vehicle number(s). If you plan to pay online please write ‘Online’ in the amount enclosed portion of the registration form.

Restrictions
  • ·     For safety reasons we will be doing technical inspections
    ·     Vehicles must conform to 2002 or newer SAE rules
    ·     All vehicles must use the standard 10 HP Briggs & Stratton engine
    ·     Stock mufflers must be used (The race is being run in the town of Lake Linden and we do not want to annoy our hosts)
    ·     No studded tires or skis
    ·     Flags are required, but brake lights are not
    ·     Clutch covers, chain guards, and a working kill switch are required.
    ·     Safety gear such as seat belts, helmets, neck brace, and wrist restraints must be worn at all times in the vehicle.
    ·     Governor settings must not exceed 3800 rpm

Please notify us as soon as possible if you wish to attend this year’s event.  Please inform us how many cars your team will be bringing, an estimate of how many people you will be bringing, and how large your trailer is so we can plan for the track and banquet.

This year looks like a great year for snow, so if you’re even considering attending the event make hotel reservations NOW.  Houghton is a popular tourist destination for skiing and snowmobiling so hotels will be limited.  There are 20 rooms at the Super 8 reserved under MTU Baja. These rooms are only reserved until January 2nd.  You can always cancel the rooms, most within 24 hours notice.  Phone numbers for local hotels are listed below.

Unfortunately, we don’t currently have an official website for the event. Checkout last year’s Facebook page for pictures and info. We will be keeping the page updated with information for this year’s event.

Please e-mail us if you would like to attend and with any other question

Thank you.

Just wanna say great job to the MTU guys for putting on an awesome race! I loved the dirty dozen concept.  Maybe next year an even smaller portion of the track? (Gotta love that carnage!)  As a separate suggestion, maybe consider hosting a race next year in Miami or somewhere on the beach. 70-80 degrees and girls in bikinis would beat the hell out of ice and girls wearing 7 layers Wink

On the way home we hit our trailer with the other vehicle.  We weren't sure how to get the car home so we decided to measure the car to see if it fit in the trailer. It ended up fitting so we loaded it up on the side of the road and then finished on our way home. when we got back and were unloading everything they were giving tours to perspective students, and the tour guides kept telling the tours that we were another organization even though we had The sae stickers on the side of the trailer.

Atleast your trailer was big enough/car was small enough to make this work!  I've been to invitationals before with our rig and tools in the bed of a pickup truck.  We'd have been SOL...  but having a good time on the side of the road never hurt anyone Thumbs Up

Ya, it was a fun time especially when the cop looked at us as we were measuring the car and trailor to see if it would fit.
