Greetings, We students of DHAANISH AHMED COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING, chennai are participating in baja baja(2015) for the first time. We have designed the roll cage. How to find the mass of the vehicle and how to design other components? We will be grateful for your suggestions. Thank you. |

We've had good results using a scale.

assuming you used solidworks like the rest of us... on the evaluate tab there's a mass option, that approximates the mass of the part, provided you properly set your material

That means we have to design each nut and bolt,washer with appropriate materials to know the exact mass of the vehicle?

not necessarily... we have had good results by simply designing/finding pre-made models for major components, making an assembly, getting the estimated mass, and then deciding on an educated guess of the total weight of all the little things, largely based off experience with past cars. if you only care to be accurate to the nearest 25lbs, it works well.
if you aren't good at "guess the weight" games, an alternative which is potentially more accurate is to design major components, get the solidworks approximation, then get a scale and weigh all of your hardware

start by making a Baja that can finish an endurance race (let alone pass tech) and then start thinking about weigth...
and yes you'll have to design the whole thing if you want to avoid some grinding later...

@felixb:
Our aim is to construct a baja vehicle in order to make it run on the track. We are not concentrating on innovations, since this is our first time(a big leap) for our standards. so what are the things to be fulfilled to achieve above stated? |

Ensure that each and every component you design is done by considering the appropriate load cases and factors of safety. By doing this, you might not build a light car but will surely build a durable one.

furthermore, read the rules and be sure to understand them... it's not rare to see teams not even getting passed tech...

If your reading comprehension is as good as your engineering skills, you may be in for a though time.
