Hi guys,

In addition to the SAE Brazil's National competition (open to any team in the world) also happen three regional events open to teams of three main regions of Brazil: Southeast (September 25-26), Northeast (November 13-14) and South (November 27-28).

On the last weekend was the first event (Southeast region).
See some photos of the event:

How is FEI allowed to run half of a firewall like that? They tried it in Carolina and had to put the rest back on (which, conveniently, they had all ready to go, just in case . . .).

Is there some difference in the Brazilian rule set, or are the tech judges just considerably more lax?

Yes the rules between Brazil and USA can be a little different.  Lets just say that we (RIT) were very surprised when we raced down there a couple years ago.

The Brazilian rule on the firewall says it should extend between upper and lower LCs in RRH and says that its function is to separate the pilot of the engine and fuel tank.
The FEI's fire wall touches the upper LC on just one point and the other walls located between LBD, FABs and RLC complete the isolation without increasing frontal area of the car.
It is a question of interpretation of written rule, but in my opinion is a violation.

I wonder how much drag that reduces?  If their roof didn't hang down so low it would probably have more of an impact.  Is there an advantage to have a firewall like that?  I can only think of drag and a small amount of weight.

Rearward visibility.  The only reason I would have remotely considered a midengine car is so I could mount a rear view mirror up close under the roof (so it stays clean) to see behind me.  Side mirrors get covered in mud too quickly.

Take your firewall off and drive the car around, see how much faster it is. They're a pretty big sail, our firewalls.

The cars were weighed by the committee.

Poli USP 01 - 150kg (330lbs)
FEI 01 - 155kg (341lbs)
Poli USP 02 - 160kg (352lbs)

FEI had a fluids analysis in S.C. and with the fire wall off it redussed there coefficient of drag by .2 for .96 to .75 (it was something like that not exact numbers). We have the pic somewhere and i will have to look it up for the real numbers.

Hey look! A Colorful Fancy Diagram! Tongue

All joking aside, that is an interesting result. To be honest, I've thought of having the fire wall do exactly what theirs does before, since it will still completely shield the driver from gas spills.

yes we thought of doing that last year to. they had to run the course with the full fire wall so if you do try to do this make sure that you have a extra that can be put in place (just incase).

As a safety rule, it makes no sense...

But, that's not the only thing that doesn't make sense on the rulebook, and we still have to follow.

As a safety rule, it makes good sense. The worst fire I've seen/heard of was in '05. The car ended up resting on its rear: pointing straight up to the sky like rocket ready to go. The fire came up and around the firewall and burned the driver's arms. With half a firewall, he would have received serious burns as he have experienced direct exposure to the flames. That incident is why you're required to wear a fire-retardant upper garment. The fire, along with a team repeatedly driving off a cliff at another race, is why the firewall width was increased for '06.

If the firewall isolates from the fuel tank and engine,  the rule of the complete firewall makes no sense, the same rule book allow lateral and front engine, so as safety, the strange firewall isolates as good as a complete one, thats what i'm saying.

What i'm trying to say is, this car is still safer than a lateral engine one.

The pilot of the winning team was too excited after the finish line, flipped twice and then the car caught fire.
