At 2:17 AM after a 42 hour shop marathon we got '09 rolling, barely but it rolls, then promtly left for Christmas.  We're super excited because this didn't happen last year until mid February.  Who else has a rolling chassis and where is everybody with their cars this year?

We have the jig on the table. The tubing bent and currently we are doing weld test before we start welding the frame.

Our frame is done and about 1/2 welded. The front arms are tack welded, just waiting on the threaded bungs and ball joints to show up. Trailing arms are being fabbed over break. We would have been rolling a month ago, but it's hard to buy stuff with no money. Should be running be the end of January (too bad I had to graduate and get a job).

So update on the Hopkins Baja team. Feb-9-09

We are sizing up the suspension, but you can get a good idea of how the car will look from these pictures.

Ground clearance is about 12" as it sits right now, but we will probably go with a static height of 8-9 inches.  Also measured travel is about 7" on the front and rear.

Rear Drive configuration: We are trying something new this year.  We have a 2 stage chain reduction with a CVT.  The kicker in the design is that the engine is actually over the rear tires.  This reduces our wheel base by about 9 inches from last year.  Hopefully it will give us a tighter turning radius.

Questions? Let me know

Later,
Adam

We're waiting on uprights to be on wheels but we started working on body panels last night.

Here are the pics(the black tube above the panel is from last year and is being removed):

Thanks man.  Our Formula team didn't think we could make it lol.  We're lucky enough to have a talented sheet metal man on the team.

We ran a smaller one last year and it was great for placing the tach and kill and we hid the master cylinder reservoirs under it.

Check our website.

http://sae.udayton.edu/new/

We had issues finding a tube bender. We were delayed about 2 weeks getting somebody to bend 1-1/8" tube... Finally we are building again. Going together nicely. Hopefully the details wont kill us. Will post pics once we have a more complete car.

We bought our own bender last year and it was definitely a great investment.

To tell you the truth it is heavy... 18 Lbs... we were looking into getting something lighter like plastic or aluminum but plastic seems like it lacks support and the aluminum one was a bit out of our price range (kirkey). Which seat are you guys using?

For our seats we made a mold off a production seat, and then layup a new one out of fiberglass. They generally work well. Lightweight too. We don't do any special layups either. Just lay the fiberglass on the mold a spread resin over it. Not the prettiest, but it works.

for our seat we used the 10 degree economy layback.  But we have modified it substantially.  We have cut aways for the seatbelts to go through at shoulder level and have drilled 3" holes on the back to reduce almost all of the weight.  Our seat weights about 5 lbs.  We then use a black cover for the seat.

But there is almost no padding, so it is a very rough ride.  Also when it gets dirty it looks bad and cheap.

We carved our seat out of a block of foam and then covered it with 2 way stretch spandex.  It has tons of cushion and support and weighs 3.5lbs.

Kind of hard to see but you get the idea...

Looks good.

We are are still waiting on Polaris parts before we can get on wheels, but the frame is coming along nicely. We have some issues with our rear upright tubes, they didnt get bent right. So we are still trying to figure out what to do about that. Once all of our parts finally show up, it should go together pretty quick. Just need to find time to work on the Design Report...

Since I graduated in December, I haven't been around to see much. Hopefully I'll get some seat time before Alabama! Far as I know, they should be rolling by the end of next week. Main hold up has been waiting for parts to show up.

Got the frame back from painting this Monday.  Man I love powdercoating; we usually just spray paint it :).  We are looking to start testing this Saturday.  We are running the new CV Tech CVT so we need to get the right settings dialed in.

Later,
Adam

Adam from Bucknell Baja here. We build our Mini Baja car as a mechanical engineer senior design project so you'll never see the same face from one year to the next! In any case, we've already put about 10 hours of driving into this year's car and it's running very well.

All it's missing is a nice paint job and some body panels.

From UTK, we just got rolling tonight! Much to our chagrin, we discovered a clanking from the rear diff, but looks to be the result of not having any grease in it. She's all painted up, and we lack the correct sprockets and braking system installation.

We had an eventful weekend here starting with an ultimatum set by our adviser that we don't go to East if we weren't driving over the weekend. So after about 800 miles of driving around to pick up and deliver shafts and things and 46 hours personally we met the deadline. Sorry were going to keep her a secret though til East we'd like you to be surprised, haha. Looking forward to seeing what everyone has for cars though, I know we may have dropped close to 200 lbs from our 590 lb beast at East last year were expecting a lot of the same at East from everyone, 13 days til we leave and cannot wait.

We are in the "rolling chassis that needs a lot of finish welding" stage right now. We were plagued by supplier issues in getting our gearbox casing machined which held up chassis fab. We are still waiting on the shafts for our gearbox, but once we get those, we can make our halfshafts and should be able to drive around. My goal is for driving to happen this weekend. Unfortunately this is also being held up by suppliers. Hopefully everything comes in this week.

That's great news guys.  zehlerdj, glad you pulled it off.

The one thing we hate about organizing for East is that (since we're in the South), we always get asked to be the first competition of the season, which always has a really high no-show rate.  This year, we've only received something like 84 design reports, which is a shame because that means there's almost no chance of more than 84 teams showing up, max--a bit of a bummer when we started with a sold-out roster and more than a handful of teams begging to be put on a waiting list (which SAE is not really set up to do currently, so sadly they were turned away).

We're hoping that since nobody has floats just this once that maybe it'll be a bit better and we won't lose any more.  All of us organizers (especially those of us who are Baja alumni, which is the majority) are really pumped about the Auburn competition this year, and we can't wait for you guys to get down here and have a great time.  We have made a ton of improvements that we really feel you guys will find awesome.  13 days and counting!

It's hard to believe that we are so close to the competition. We need only a few bolts for the brake calipers and our sprocket (awaiting delivery...hopefully will be here Friday), before she's ready to drive. Just a couple of more items before we are completely done and ready to race!

Last year we had the same problem with a supplier not producing our transmission case that was integrated into our design.  This forced us to make some swing arm mounting changes the night before Tennessee in the parking lot to accommodate the stock transmission case. I’m sure the Tennessee guys remembered that. That whole week before comp everyone at the shop got very little sleep. But in the end we got it done and the first time I drove the car was at the practice area. I am sure most of you know what it’s like. Don’t give up till it’s over.

This Sunday I am shooting for a driving car. Just a few more things need to be made. If I can find some time I will slip some pics in.

Just found out from my supplier that I probably won't have my gearbox parts until Wednesday! Angry Ugh.

Probably just paint before testing now and then hope we don't have any major welding to do. Going to be a busy couple of days next week.

We've been running for about 3 weeks. They finally got it out for some major thrashing last night and today. GPS showed a top speed of just over 35 (gear limited). Glad to report no failures, though they found a couple things that need to get modified/reenforced. I'll post a couple pics once I get them.

Got her 90% ready this weekend.  All we have left to do (for testing) is bleed the brakes and then we have 2 months for romping to work out any kinks before Wisconsin.

Just got it running tonight for a spin! Little loose on the throttle and CVT belt, and still need to add the second brake reservoir. Should be good to go!

Well after about an hour of debating, our team decided to go with last years frame which is very similar to this years.  Reason being is that we didn't feel as though my welds would be sufficient enough for the judges.  I'm pretty confident that they would be ok but we would rather be 100% sure.  Last year's frame welder is better than I am so we decided to go with the guaranteed route.  Now it's even more of a mad scramble to get the car finished..... Leaving for Alabama in one week.  See you guys there

Hey Guys,

Just an update on the Hopkins Baja team testing.

We went with a rear engine configuration.  This makes it so the car does understeer a bit.  However, what we have found is that high speed stability over rocks and bumps is phenomenal!! Also, it jumps totally flat.

check out this link to see.

We usually run floats all around, but found them rebounding too slow in the front and switched to coilovers

Later,

Good luck and see you in AL

Rear engined cars will understeer as long as you're flat-out (no front end grip). Back off mid-turn, however, and they'll swap ends on you so fast you won't know what happened (weight transfer leading to huge grip changes and a big pendulum hanging out the back).

Ok, that's probably an exageration on Baja cars. Go drive an old 911 or air-cooled VW, though, and you'll know what I'm talking about!

We tried that technique, and it would work... if we had a differential :(  .  I think a lot of the understeer comes from the locked drive wheels pushing the car straight.

Next year, differential for sure!!

Now, to just find an old 911......

Later,
Adam

Try stiffening up your rear end, and it will induce oversteer. Our car is rear engine with a locked rear and it's quite happy to oversteer. Stiff torsion bar helps with that.

Hey adam, where is that? Looks like a good location.

You can also use your roll center axis to change over/understeer characteristics when designing suspensions.   We are locked and rear engine, no problem going into oversteer if need be.
