Since we're not trying to keep it under wraps this year I'll go ahead and post a shot of the 2010 TTU Prototype frame...or a part of it. Our car is similar in design to last year's, but only the general frame shape (yes every part is at least a little different), braking system and the Gaged CVT will be retained. We are going to be running a differential for the first time this year and some sweet gold shocks that I blew a bunch of money on :) We're pretty excited to be fabricating the frame so early.
Let's see what everybody else has! |

Early? Viking47's frame is basically done; we get our waterjetted suspension tabs back on Monday and by mid-week we're going to be fabricating suspension. We didn't campaign a new car last year, so we got started on this year's a little early.
Viking 47 isn't going to be a huge departure from what we've done with the last couple Viking cars, so not too many secrets here either. Just another set of revisions on a solid design. Same trailing arms, same low CG and rear weight bias, same wheelbase and trackwidth, same tall tires. Basically its a new chassis based around the old suspension and dimensions that we really like; it'll have better ergonomics and user comfort, and an all-new final drive gearbox with multiple forward speeds and reverse. It'll lose a little weight in most systems, but probably gain most of it back in the gearbox, so still a tad on the heavy side.
Anybody else spend their summer welding and praying for no major rule changes?

Chris,
I dare you put a pair of tires near the bottom corners of that rear roll hoop. :) USF Baja 8 is currently a few brake calipers in a box, but frame fabrication is all set to start once we get back from Auburn next weekend. So with any luck we'll have pictures of our own to post here in a week or so. |

Well, since we started the '08 car in the middle of December I'm pretty happy with where we are at.
Greg, I have no idea why you would dare me that, but I've got plenty since we tested some this summer. |

All but two (noncritical) of our bent parts are bent and all the heavy-wall tube parts are notched and tacked. The majority of our thin-wall parts cut and notched. Should have the roll hoop, RHOs, FMBs, SIMs, and LFS tacked together by the time we leave the shop Tuesday evening. Hope to have the rear cage main elements together by Thursday and the bracing parts in on Saturday. This planning ahead thing really works. We are really trying to have the tubular parts of the chassis complete by the end of the month. We actually are having some of the new members building a "pit wagon" to pull our tools around in. It's great fab practice for them, plus its useful. And it has shocks and independent suspension. :) |

Yeah i've been thinking about that... especially one that we could hook right up to the rear tow plate on the car, though I'm not sure if that's allowed.
As for fab, we've got a bit of a late start being on the quarter system and having that california sunshine distracting us all the time, but we're working on suspension parts and jigs and starting to fab the chassis on weekends. Our goal is to have a rolling chassis by the LA auto show (early December) though that's a bit of a stretch.

We picked up a garden wagon from Lowes on the way to WI this year. Excellent decision. It hauled all our crap around, and once we passed tech, we swapped the handle for the included garden tractor tow bar, and let the car do the pulling. See if I can get away with hotlinking this... |

We bought that same cart from TSC (as have other teams as well) Ours didnt last very long because we decided to tow it around school after we bought it and painted it and lets say it doesn't hop over curbs very well at full speed...
We actually broke part of it at montreal too and had to weld it back together. We spent more time fixing our cart then our car which was fine with me!
Right now we have our frame started and are building control arms. This year the frame is a design/build and the front suspension mounting has started to become that as well. This is the earliest build progress we have ever had, but check back in March and I bet we are just as tight on time as any other year.

It is true UofL tradition to fabricate our entire car the night before we leave for competition.... lol

haha, and for testing you just ducttape all the nodes of the frame together before hand right?! That way if a noob rolls the car and crushes the tubes in testing they are easier to to replace, youknowwhatimsayingmanlols! Baja is probably the most stressful thing we can do, isn't it? I don't remember the team, but there was a team that would mock up the entire frame in wood before building it... Edited by Waffles - Oct/20/2009 at 6:20pm |

We almost did that this year... PVC was expensive so 4130, C-clamps, and Masking tape did the job. |

we've done some PVC work before just to check clearances and stuff... it does cost some extra money though, so we're not doing it this year either.
