This looks like a lot of fun. Me and the rest of the team at CSUF are all interested in going. We just you, El Geffe, an email saying that we would like to go. Are there any rules, specifically any about engine mods or swaps?

Hey y'all! UA is going to run a race this November over Veterans' Day weekend, the 10-12th. We want to run it Gila Bend again, and hopefully entice some Cali teams to come join us.
So far the plan is to have an endurance race in the evening, ending just before sunset. Then have a large bonfire, grill some brats and burgers, and socialize. Teams can camp out with us or grab a hotel in Gila Bend if needed. Let me know what you think. We'll try contacting teams this week, so send me contact info for AZ, south Cali, NM, NV, and UT teams if you have it! Sorry if you've already contacted me at the previous email. I'm learning as I go. If you would like to contact me, please use my team's email thanks! uabaja@gmail.com Edited by El Geffe - Sep/21/2017 at 12:22am |

I know that everyone cancelled on coming to Prescott Valley Gran Prix, but I really do think that it would be a great venue for teams to race at in the future. Its a smaller race that has a bunch of good obstacles in a relatively small space, and chances are, if we give the organizer enough notice, he is willing to add obstacle/sections that are Baja SAE specific. Here are some pictures from the race a couple of weeks ago

Unfortunately UNLV will not be attending this race. Like U of A, we were hoping for an event like last years Arizona get together. Honestly for us; the start time sucks, the car count looks like it will be low and we could spend the money used for this trip on something else. We are looking to do something similar to last years Arizona event here in Vegas, possibly sometime in November. When we put together the details, I'll create a post in the forums. |

Hi everyone, U of A Baja here. So we were under the impression that we would not have to pay to enter the race similar to the previous years, or get additional safety equipment. Especially for a race that would most likely be an hour or so long. If there's any interest in doing something similar to what we have done in the past (camp for a weekend, race our cars, and have a good time) we would still be up for that, but unless something changes regarding the Prescott Valley event U of A will most likely no longer be attending.

So with some effort, the updated list of vehicles is:
Confirmed: ASU Poly: 3 cars U of A: 3 cars UNLV: 1-2 cars Tentative: ASU Tempe: 1-2 cars NAU: ? cars I just spoke with the organizer, and he would be happy to have us participate, and would be willing to give us our own time slot after the UTV race ends (at about 4:45)
UofA has stated that they will only be able to attend on Sunday, as Saturday is their homecoming, and the cars are committed elsewhere, so I suggest that we have our race on Sunday. I read through all of the rules, and the only rules that they have that are beyond the Baja SAE rules are that the racing suit must be head to toe, not just the upper garment, also including fire resistant shoes. Also, that a 5lb fire extinguisher is needed in the pits. Read all of the rules here: http://azopracing.com/docs/2016_AZOP_UTV_Rules.pdf There will be a $65 entry fee, and an additional $10 for an AZOP transponder. Here is the flyer |

I don't think we can make it this year. Love the idea of a real race, but can't justify 12 hours of driving for a 50 minute race. Besides, too close to the 1000

Just wanted to do an update, and see who else is interested in attending. As of now, I suggest going with the AZOP Prescott Valley Gran Prix, on October 24/25. As we get more solid on the number of vehicles, I will coordinate with the event organizer.
Confirmed: ASU Poly: 3 cars U of A: 2-3 cars UNLV: 1-2 cars Tentative: SDSU: ? cars UTEP: ? cars ASU Tempe: 1 car NAU: ? cars If you are on the tentative list, please let me know if you can make it, and if so, how many cars you are planning on bringing |

UNLV should be able to make it. We might have two cars; one runs and we are working on restoring the 2014 car. If possible make it after the 1st week of November. We will be attending SEMA that week. Also, I assume the other SAE student orgs are attending SEMA too.

I think you misread that. It is only a 4 mile loop for the entire course (for those of you that went last year, that was a 3 mile loop. There is a 30 min practice, and a 50 minute race.

I think the AZOP Prescott Valley race would be a great opportunity. I did confirm with the organizer, and all repairs need to happen in the pits.

That date is really close to the Baja 1000, which tends to be a pretty busy time at work. But if this turns into an actual race, I'll do all I can to bring a car (stock engine). If this is part of another orgs. desert race, I would assume it will be acceptable to stop on course to make repairs and/or change a tire? Let's make it happen!

As mentioned before, depending on the number of cars, we might be jumping in on an AZOP race. Right now, that would be the Prescott Valley race (October 24-25), that will go through downtown Prescott Valley, and include a 4 mile loop that includes jumps and an endurocross section.

Btt. Who all is interested in coming this year? Depending on how many cars we have interested, there is a chance that we might work with AZOP (http://www.arizonaoffroadpromotions.com/) to jump in on one of their races

Race went off great. Course was a little too easy in my opinion, but at one point, 5 of the 8 cars were in the pits getting fixed, so I guess it wasn't that easy. Here are some photos to keep it entertaining, If anyone else has more, please feel free to post them

Glad to hear we will have more recovery vehicles available as needed.
I went out yesterday at lunch to make sure everything looked good, and it does. Just a reminder, I will be looking for appropriate safety gear for EVERYONE. If you are on recovery in a UTV, please have helmet, goggles, gloves, etc. If you are driving a Baja Car, Helmet, Goggles, Gloves, Pants, Fire Resistant Upper Garment, Wrist Restraints, neck brace. Also, please make sure you have your fire extinguishers charged and mounted, and make sure to bring your spares. I will want those near the fueling pits.

I know some families have already volunteered from UA as recovery crew. They both have Arctic Cat Wildcats which should have no issue towing people in. They are also going to camp and go out before us around 630pm.
I think that maybe for the first hour or so we just run course 1, easier for people to watch and recovery crews. Then if most the teams are still going strong we can open up the tougher section as well to make it harder. |

U of A here!
We are bringing three cars as of right now. We are leaving Tucson Friday evening around 7:30 since there is an exam in the afternoon for many of our members. There are also some parents who would like to attend and will be bringing various off-road vehicles that can be used for recovery if there is not enough. We should also have enough people to stand at various locations around the course and possibly at the road if we choose to use the full course. Everyone is really looking forward to this weekend for sure.

Another Update.
Teams Attending, and number of cars: Confirmed: ASU Poly - 3 cars U of A - 2 cars NAU - 1 car UNLV - 1 car ASU Tempe - 1 car As far as recovery vehicles, this is what we have confirmed: Rally Fighter Razr Jeep Cherokee Tacoma (Richie's) My old 2010 Baja Car (Maybe) As far as people go, U of A usually brings out about 20 people, so we usually have enough course workers. Richie, don't worry about me, I will keep myself entertained! |

It's a shame you will be stuck with a 4cyl Tacoma hauling a baja in the back if that is the case. What is the plan for pulling out broken cars and such? Seems like a big track with few course workers. I can retrieve cars with my Tacoma but it's slow going with my suspension... Also, if anyone could bring a spare 200mm CVTech belt that would be helpful. I finished dremeling smooth a big 'ol gouge in our P90 primary and am hoping that doesn't kill the belt. I have a CVTech primary as a spare but no belt.

Hoople, Are you going to be part of the design review on Friday? I am going to be up there at UNLV as part of the design review panel. As of right now there is about an 85% chance I will be driving a Rally Fighter back. It would be nice if we could caravan down. According to Mr. O'Toole the design review should be done around 11:45. I am good to go after that.

Is everyone planning on getting there on Friday and camping out where Tony suggests? We'll probably get there round 6pm on Friday because a lot of us have a morning class so we won't be leaving Vegas til like 12-1.

From Las Vegas/Flagstaff
(assuming you know how to get to Gila Bend):
Take AZ-85 S/Phoenix Bypass Slight right onto Phoenix Bypass Route (going into Gila
Bend). Go 1 mile Continue onto E Pima St (the main street running through
Gila Bend). Go 1.1 miles Turn Left onto S Martin Ave (It sneaks up on you, as it is
hidden behind a large building). Go 0.4 miles Slight Right on private looking road to keep going south
(You are trying to go under the highway). Go 0.75 miles After going under the highway, you are there. Historically
we have camped on the left side of the road. From Tucson/I-8: Take exit 119 toward AZ-85/I-10, then go 1.4 miles Turn left onto E South Main Street Continue onto S Main Street, and go 1.5 miles. The road will
then want you to go right, but there is a private looking road off to the left,
take that (you are trying to go under the highway) After going under the highway, you are there. Historically
we have camped on the left side of the road. From Phoenix/I-10: Take exit 164 AZ-347 toward Maricopa. Go 14.7 miles Turn Right onto AZ-238W/W Smith Enke Rd. Go 39.2 miles Continue onto Phoenix Bypass Route. Go 1.1 miles Continue onto E Pima St (the main street running through
If you have any questions, feel free to call me.

Sorry for the lack of info. My computer at work crashed, and I tried to use my wifes computer with very little success.
Here is a picture of the course(s) We will have three options: 1) Run course in green only. This course is "easy". It is also very compact with great visibility of course. Course is 3 miles long. 2) Run Course in Red only. This course is much more difficult (Whoops, sand washes, silt!). Much more spread out. Course is 2.75 miles long 3) Run Both Red and Green courses combined (at yellow sections). The major downside to this is that it will include crossing a road. The road has traffic of ~1 car/hr. We would need to set up a flag man with a stop on each lap. Combined course should be ~6 miles long. Because this is just desert, we have historically camped on site. |

Hi. UNlV SAE president here. We were planning on arriving the night before and camping out but the only official campsite Im aware of is 13 miles away from Gila Bend. It's called Painted Rock Petroglyph Site. If there's some place closer besides the side of the road we would like to know about it.
Tony, we need more details please and make that ASAP! I'm trying to plan this trip for our members but have no info to give them at all besides the race is in Gila Bend. Where is the race site at? Can we camp there? How strict will tech be? If I don't get enough info soon, UNLV may not be able to make it. We would really like to be there so help us out! Thanks! |
