Jeff
University of Michigan Ann Arbor

I was the one who "totaled" one of our cars at Illinois last year.  I tried to jump all four whoops on the back section of the course but only made it past 3 and hit the fourth, sending me airborne and landing on the rear of the car, messing up my back pretty good.

I'll try to post some pics soon.

I'm Kenneth, also from Michigan. 2006-2007 Captain and 2007-2008 Co-captain. I'm the team's weight weenie.

Here's the car that Jeff wrecked in Illinois, "Lightening" (335 lbs)

And the 2007-2008 car, "The Sardine." So named for having way too much stuff in too small of a space. (297 lbs)

Hi, I'm Ihsan from McGill (Montreal). Here are some shots of the McGill MB08.

Tabletop in Orford S&T:

Brake test in Orford:

In the snow race at ULaval (L'Epreuve Du Nord IV) this year, with me at the wheel.

This year we're fabricating two cars (MB09 and MB10), but the MB09 uses all of the MB08's mechanical bits.

On a side note, I hate these plain Fox Floats. There just isn't enough compression damping for a vehicle this heavy. And these tires are just rubbish (the car pushes badly and gets stuck in the mud).

I've never been a fan of those Carlisles either. What does your car weigh? We are running the floats this year for the first time. The damping of the shocks should be adjustable by changing shim stacks and nitrogen pressure.

Around 430 lbs race ready without driver. The front and rear suspension had 5/8" rod ends on every end the CVT guard was a monster (it was fiberglass, but had a 2" wide - I think - steel band all round), and the bearing carrier on the trailing arm was huge (we used the Sportsman 500/700/800 outer CV joint, which was plain huge)... hence the weight, haha.

As far as the compression damping, the Floats could be pumped with pure air, and we ran about 100-120 psi (the recommended setup was 60), but even then the car was bottoming out like crazy off the jumps. I'm trying to find a local Fox service center that can do the shim change for me, which isn't easy (most Quebec riders simply don't use Fox, so there's no real demand for air shocks around here).

Andrew Smock here, University of Arizona Team Leader 06-09.

We built the tank last year at Illinois with the bulletproof chain-driven swingarms.  Our new vehicle is 'dieting' and turning out pretty sweet.

Here are some pics of the 2008 car:

Name: Andy

I've taken over the role of Tech Director and Co-Captain for 2009... big changes for 2009 including a weight reduction of about 100# (25+# in the frame alone, most of the tubes in the rear end disappeared). Also, switched from Elka coils to Fox Float Evols for further weight reduction and adjustability... it's a shame most of the guys are graduating this year as it's the last of our 3-year tech program.

Pics... Our fat, overweight 2008 version, our school's first Baja since 2005:

Lending McGill a hand this winter... (hi guys!) Wink

Since this old thread got brought up, I figured I might as well update it with our new cars, seeing as we've come a long way since the Tank!

First, our 2009 car, which weighed more than 200 lbs less than the Tank.  Still heavy, but we actually kept up with the pack:

Next, our 2010 car, which weighed 395 lbs and got 3rd place in Design at Washington:

Current status:
The Tank refuses to die, the 2009 transmission is toast, and 2010 is currently serving as test bed to help our 2011 design.

The shaft and the lower camber link are just directly in line in this photo.  If you're talking about our little incident on the Rock Crawl course, this pic is before that.  We're actually in the tech line in this pic.

Yeah it might be frowned upon...  I always wanted to bring my yellow and purple rebel flag to fly below our Lipscomb "L" flag, but I thought it was a bit distasteful for public display.  LOL

Of course it would have been distasteful (seeing Yankees mock the flag of Dixie, that is).  Smile

RIT had a thing for Trucker Girls. It made the car look tacky in IMO. I think they did it just to get under my skin.

We had a guy that liked to push the envelope of appropriate/professional a little more than the "fun and good" limits that most of us enjoy.  Among the things he tried to sneak onto the car was a phallic throttle pedal.

An NRA and "I love Hooters" stickers were about as far as we've pushed things....

So you don't think it would be appropriate to put one of our sponsors slogans on the side of the car next to their logo:

Aardvark Drilling Inc. - Our goal is your hole!LOL

I used to work for them and said that as a joke one day... I said it showed we were dedicated to customer service. Next thing I know its on their pens and then some of the trucks.
