Those are some sharp looking vehicles.  Can't wait to race them.  What is the purpose of the purple/red/gold colored paint on the wheels and shocks/springs?  To keep the team from making changes?

Exactly, the CVT also is painted and the engine is sealed. The first 5 placed has the engine seized for analysis against illegal modifications and receive a new one at the end of the event.

SAE Bazil was a wild time when we went last year.  It is completely different from the US races, there were a couple things that surprised us down there, one driver for all the events and only one team member would be allowed to work on the car on the track.

They arrived late for the safety inspection, then received a penalty.

I'd be pretty pissed if someone started painting the shocks and wheels on our car.

Looks good!  One thing I've always wondered about is the distinctly different look of Brazilian cars compared to those from the US and other countries.  It seems to me the vast majority of Brazilian cars share the same distinct characteristics of a super-short wheel base, a rounded, overhanging nose, and a roof, among other things.  I'm curious how much of this is rules-based vs. how much is just habit of the Brazilian teams and how these habits might have came to be.

One thing that always impresses me is the tight turning capabilities of the brazilian cars.  I've seen a couple maneuverability videos where cars will literally pivot about the inside front tire.  I only wish we could get our car to turn that tight.

The Roof is Rule based, we have to have the number and a space for petrobrás advertise.

All brazilian cars use some of the ideas from the 98' Midwest champion, wich was a simple, lightweight, small car.. All teams that suceed got ideas from them, As Baja SAE started in 95 in brazil, there were few cars, they influenced the new teams a lot.

The short wheelbase (ranging from 1350mm(53") to 1550mm(61")), and the small turning radius, is a consequence of our competiton (we have as little as 6 ft theorical turning radius). There are cars with a longer wheelbase, they don't perform well on our competiton, and as the team evolves, they see that is something required to get competitive cars. Steering/Suspension geometry and oversteer behaviour also helps.

Look at a good example of that:

The last couple of years the competition changed a bit, with Suspension and traction, and the track got a lot harder on the cars (of 66, 26 finished the endurance, and 90% of them broke and came back). The cars are not get smaller, they are getting a higher clearance and more suspension travel.

This Year FEI evolved a lot, broke speed records, and won everything except for traction (a very low geared, heavy car won). they made a 100 ft acceleration in 3.6 sec. So, be aware.

Poli-USP corrected some of the problems they had on their design, and might be a surprise this year..

UFSC nearly got to go to SC, even without the dynamics points. (the other car from them, a IRS car).

The 98's champion was the Brazilian team UFRN. They had winners designs between 98 and 2004. These designs have influenced many other teams, especially when the Brazilian competition focused a lot on maneuverability.

This video shows the last competitive UFRN's car:
