Hi guys,
I was looking into getting a compressed air paint gun setup, similar to what is used in automotive body shops. I have an idea of what I need, but was wondering if people had any suggestions of what gear they use for painting their car, or perhaps any products to avoid. Thanks, Adam |

I used to work as a mechanic in a shop that also did quite a bit of body work. Most any HVLP paint gun will get the job done for a baja car, and actually smaller volume (less expensive) guns will be more ideal for painting a tube chassis. Make sure to have an adjustable regulator and a dryer setup on the air line you use. All of that is reletively cheap for low volume painting. The critical and most expensive equipment for painting is the ventilation stuff. Automotive paint is nasty stuff, and you don't want to do it without proper ventilation and a respirator. "Omni" is a decent low-cost polyurethane-based paint brand if you're painting on the cheap.
Honestly though, by the time you invest in all the equipment needed to safely and effectively paint a car with auto paint, you'd be better off taking your chassis and large components to somewhere that does powdercoating; its way more durable and will keep the car rust-free and looking nice waaaay longer. If that is too expensive, just rattle can everything and call it a day. Make sure to approach the powdercoater for a sponsorship discount or something, we get our chassis and suspension all powdercoated for next to free every year by a local place that sponsors our team.
Also, for body panels and stuff, we've found that screen printed vinyl looks pretty amazing on a baja car. You can design up any color scheme you want for the car, put your sponsor logos and competition numbers right into it, and get enough printed out to cover the whole car for a few hundred bucks. Putting it on the panels is just like playing with giant stickers. Anyone that has seen our car at design in the last couple years can attest how good it looked. Like I tell my team, I learned in the used car buisness, "shiney cars sell". Its not what Design should be about, but the truth of the matter is that the judges are humans, they will be drawn to the prettiest cars and associate them with good craftsmanship whether its true or not. Another thing to look for is companies nearby that make parts which are powdercoated from the factory. We had an offer once to just hang stuff on a line that was going through the powdercoater. Granted, you dont get a choice in color that way, but its free

Very true. Black is probably the most common color most powdercoaters use, we usually make black one of the two colors we get done for our car, and try to give them the parts far enough ahead of time that they can throw them in with other batches of parts from other customers. If you approach them early and plan ahead and bring them parts that are already blasted clean, they may give you a break to just add some parts into another customer's batch since you saved them a bunch of work and materials.

I too worked in an autobody shop. Try and use a self etching primer for getting better adhesion to the metal and for even color. so get a spray gun that can spray primers or base coats. If you want to paint this thing fast get a spray gun for clears. it lays the coats on pretty fast.

Make friends with a body shop in town. We found a shop this year that is willing to donate any color paint they can mix, booth time, and all the professional help and advice we can stand.

+1 for powder coating the chassis and large parts. We always found it to be super durable and if you take the time to wax it, easy to clean and keep shiney.
Barring that, getting a body shop to help you with the painting is definatly the way to go. We tried shooting paint in a makeshift booth in our shop once, and besides the fume problem, Baja shops tend to be dirty, dusty places, which inevidibly lands in your paint, and most all good metal coating systems take several hours to dry.
Paint also likes to be kept within a fairly restrictive range of temperatures and humidity to cure properly, and you need proper illumination to make sure you actually painted everything and aren't chasing shadows.
All this having been said, I know there are plenty of guys out there that shoot enamals and epoxies with a HVLP gun in their driveway and it seems to work OK. I suspect my current job as a coatings engineer subject to scrutiny by the Navy is clouding my judgement somewhat.

I agree with most in saying that I would search for a body shop or powdercoater to do it for you. We get all of our powdercoat and anodizing work done for free. We just prep the parts and tag them with the process and color we want done on each.
You can definitely learn how to shoot it yourself and do a great job but why invest the time and money if you can find someone to do it for ya? That being said, in 2008 our body panels were rattle canned. We(me) were concerned with how the powdercoat would do on the thin, flexible aluminum body panels so we prepped, primed(rattle can), and painted(rattle can). It's really cheap to do it that way and it can come out looking nice if you take your time with prep and spray it like you care about what it looks like. Last year, we got everything powdercoated or anodized including powdercoat on the body panels. It works great. I am a big fan of PC. |

I agree with the powdercoating as well. It's pretty easy to find a local custom shop that you can get interested in Baja. We were able to get all our stuff done for free. It holds up way longer than any paint job and looks nicer for a lot longer. A lot of times if you are willing to wait, you can get other colors besides black (like orange
).If you know how to rattle can, you can get it to last for a race. There is plenty of last minute stuff we do that you'd never be able to tell until after the race when its been beat to hell. |

Hmm, ok, but your only going to one event. If you get a chance put it on your 3 argon tanks later thread after your event is finished. We'll be at Carolina and Rochester, but not Washington.
Later,
Adam
