    Posted: 2010-Jun-24 at 7:21pm
The University of Louisville chapter of SAE will once again be holding "Midnight Mayhem" under the lights of Podium1 Motocross in Charlestown, IN on September 25th, 2010.

For those that don't know by now, this is NOT a practice day.  It is a full-on 4-hour endurance race held at night on a motocross type track.  Awards will be given to the top 3 finishers.

There will be a basic tech inspection similar to last years.  This will include things like drive-train guarding, 4-wheel lock-up, governor set, etc...  Any car from 2006-present that has a "Passed Tech" sticker from a sanctioned event is eligible for this race.

Information about registration fees will be sent out as soon as it is available to all teams interested.  Last year, we did no team registration fee and had each individual team member pay the track entry fee.  We plan on doing the same thing again this year but I will have to get back with everyone on the exact pricing.

Camping and cooking out will be allowed on the race site and there will be a social event after the race for all the teams that decide to hang around.  Hopefully, the weather will co-operate better than last year.

Also, I plan on having t-shirts available for purchase and they should be right around the $10 mark like last year.  I will post an image of the t-shirt design once it is done.

Please post in this thread or e-mail me at dillon_b12@hotmail.com if you are interested in attending.

If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask them here on the forum.  I have no problem answering them through e-mail but by answering on here more teams get the information at once.

Keep an eye on this thread for updates as they are available.

Here are a few pics from last year.

Auburn is planning on trying to attend with whatever cars we have running then. Hopefully no rain this year!

Will there be a regular motocross event the same day? I've raced there before and it would be fun to race it again.

How stiff is the brake test? I don't want to have to whip out the axle grease again...LOL

Tripp,
Good to hear you guys will be making it up again.

Erik,
The track owner does have a full weekend of motocross planned.  It was planned last year as well but a solid week of rain before the event and the approaching monsoon that turned endurance into a mud bath caused him to cancel.

The brake test is about like any other Baja race.  "4-wheel lockup" isn't "4-wheel lockup" if you don't lock all four wheels Tongue.  However, we don't do it on pavement like some races so that makes things easier.  The first year it was dirt and last year was the gravel parking lot.

We have a tech checklist and I will post it up once we make any necessary revisions.  As long as you do what is on the list, you shouldn't have a problem.

Woo big relief on the brake test! We should be able to bring our car out for some fun. Any chance of an open class, the retired but modified baja's of the past??

I hope to see you guys down here. No open class though. Our goal is to provide the best possible race for everyone. Adding classes would make that much more difficult. Get your eligible cars ready and get down here. You won't regret it.

4200 RPM governor setting like last year?  I know that made that course a LOT more fun!

Chris, I believe that is the plan. Everyone always complains about the lack of speed in Baja so why not make these things move a little faster?

E-mail invitations went out today to just about every Baja e-mail I could find.  It's nothing that isn't already mentioned here but if someone's team didn't get an e-mail, please let me know anyway so I can have your e-mail to send out the registration forms and such when that time comes.

Just walked the track this afternoon and the layout looks awesome.  The big hills are still there however there are lots of long straits to build up speed to carry into the hills and corners.  The base track length is about 1.2 miles and there are a couple areas we are considering adding onto to lengthen it out similar to last year but with better execution: hopefully fences won't jump in front of anyone during the race.

Since the track owner also runs an excavating company there might be some elements added in these expanded areas to make it feel a little more Baja and less moto.  Please feel free to offer any suggestions for what you would like to see.

As of last week there are only going to be motos ran on Saturday morning, so Sunday is completely open.  There is the possibility of having an Auburn Style practice session (safety gear required with 4 wheeler support) until teams feel like they have to head home.

None of these new elements are official yet but if you like what you see or have any comments let us know.

Instead of some long boring straights I'd rather see some rolling whoops, small enough where cars can hit them full out but big enough to have a nice story when things get a little sideways...

There is a rolling whoop section on one of the longer straights that will make things interesting if you hit them right.  Ask some of the Auburn guys who were at Mayhem 1 Wink.  The longest any straight shot will be around 200 yards, however there will be a significant elevation change (34% grade according to Google Earth, which seems a little low actually) and several jumps thrown in: Podium 1 is a motocross track.

Hehe, I remember that. Either they were all over us, or we were all over them. Either way they were pushing a bit hard.

TTU and someone else were involved in a mid-air ramming on those same whoops(or maybe one of the doubles sections).

Erik, being a moto track, very few of the jumps are suited for full throttle approaches in a Baja car.  There will plenty of crashes if drivers aren't smart.  Also, the amount of high-speed twists and turns at this track create a lot more hard racing action than your typical Baja course.  Windsor and us had a few laps at Mayhem 1 where we battled back and forth, passing each other 3-4 times.

We are also looking into throwing in a few more Baja specific sections to mix it up a little.

Here is a video of the 2008 track layout from their website.  2010 will be similar in layout but have another 1/3 of track added with the mentioned baja specific elements.  Some of the nastier jumps might be cut out or altered as in years past.

http://www.podium1.com/?vidid=2008_LLQ_Lites_Practice_Helmet_Cam&myName=2008_LLQ_Lites_Practice_Helmet_Cam.flv

Hopefully we will be able to get Dillon some more up to date footage on the GoPro before the event for a quick video of what to expect.

I may need a video of this in order to convince the professors that its a valid reason to miss the finals

Don't go giving us a bad name now!  An Auburn noob parked their 07? car in front of us and our driver just kinda nudged them a little...from the air...there are some pics floating around somewhere.

I drove the first hour for the black #9 car last year and it was the most fun I've had in a baja.  There was a lot of good racing and I was able to do some friendly rubber rubbing on a good course.

As far as "baja specific" elements go I only have one request: No Goddamn Rocks.

I'll have to ask some of our alumni and see who was driving at the time for us as I wasn't there.

And I agree, while I love rock crawls, I don't want to kill the cars on rocks all night long!

Haha Tripp, it was really a situation of a super aggressive TTU driver airing it out behind a conservative AU driver.  I wasn't there either since I broke my leg the Tuesday prior, but I was told in a rather dramatic fashion that it was "all their fault" as always.

As for rock crawls I'm ok with that, but the damn rim bending, suspension denting, driver abusing rock gardens are awful and should be left out of the races, especially a "friendly" race like this one.

I don't have final say but I'm not a fan of rocks either. They don't add much excitement for the amount of sh*t they tear up. Some of the organizers met Tuesday and discussed track layout. It's still up in the air what will be added. The Baja specific things I suggested are simple things like short ditch/jump combos that are pretty easily navigated but will punish over aggressive driving.

One of the other things we are going to try to do is possibly fill between one set of doubles to make nice tabletop. That should make it possible to get some serious air.

All, here are the invitation and registration forms.  Please read them both carefully and then fill in the registration form and send it back to me at dillon_b12@hotmail.com.

This forum won't allow Excel documents to be uploaded so the registration form is a PDF and thus not editable.  I'll send out the registration form as the Excel document so it will be a little easier for everyone to fill it out.

The server is on a remote server, so reconfiguring the default files for upload is difficult on our end.

The workaround is to compress the file and upload it as a .zip or .rar.

Wanted to give you all an update on a new development for Mayhem that wasn't together in time for the invitations.  Starting on Sunday morning after the race, the track will be open for a practice session if you have any vehicles that are pre '06 and still running or might not be completely to spec per the rules.  Safety equipment will be required and enforced and we should have a few carnage vehicles around if they are needed but no track workers.  Feel free to stick around as long as your travel plans allow.

Probably beating a feverish/dead horse...

I've got a group of alumni who is now in possession of a (mostly running) '04 car.

Any chance of giving it a waiver or creating a pre '06 class that doesn't race for awards?

Would make for some motivation to get it running.

edit: '04 instead of '05

I'll run it by Scott(organizer) one more time but I probably already know the answer.  I'll e-mail you as soon as I know.  In the mean time, get it running so you can ride on Sunday!

All,

JeremyB was kind enough to make me a version of the registration form that you can fill out digitally.

I uploaded it to my post at the top of this page with the Invitation sheet.

Also, don't forget that registration closes on September 18th!  Get those forms in!!

Dillon, there is nothing in there about engine mods other than RPMs. Am i to assume stock condition (i.e. no straight pipes)?

Is each team required to have 2 extinguishers, or is each school required to have 2? Our two cars will be using the same pit, so is one extinguisher in each car and one in the pit sufficient?

One in each car and one in the pit will be fine.

We still some spots available and have decided to push back the registration date to Wednesday, September 22nd.

Based on the registrations we have already, it looks like this may be the biggest Mayhem yet. Big smile

Some of the guys went up to Podium and made a video showing parts of the track.  This isn't a final layout though, just some guys cruising around the different areas.

Rich,

I'll get back to you on those questions tomorrow.  In the meantime, enjoy:

Dillon, those shirts would have been perfect for the mudfest last year, I hope I can make it down from MI to watch some racing next weekend!

Yes they would have been haha.  Hopefully, the weather will be nicer this year.

Current forecast from the Weather Channel says a high of 82* and a low of 61*  with a 20% chance of rain.
